Difficulty moderate Mostly flatwater and easy current at target levels, but this route includes two major dam portages, dam-warning lines, possible fast dam outflow, Class I-II Grignon Rapids at low water, stronger Class II-III behavior at high water, wind on flowage pools, and a hidden take-out carry at Nepco Creek.
Permits None noted No route-specific paddling permit is known. Follow posted City of Wisconsin Rapids park rules at Veterans Memorial Park, obey all dam warning lines and portage signs, and use the Nepco Creek / County Z access without blocking the road or trail.
Camping Day trip No on-route camping is documented. Treat this as a day route with enough daylight reserved for Centralia and Port Edwards dam portages.
Season May-Oct Late spring through fall can work, but the route is best saved for low to average releases when exposed granite, manageable portages, and lower dam turbulence line up. Recheck the gauge and forecast shortly before launch because the Wisconsin can rise or fall sharply.

Access, shuttle, and map

Launch from the Veterans Memorial Park kayak/canoe launch below the Wisconsin Rapids dam, then paddle through island channels and portage around the Centralia and Port Edwards dams before finishing at Nepco Creek / County Z. Low to average water exposes granite bedrock and boulder fields; high water turns the lower rapids and dam outflows into a much more serious trip.

Start

Put-in

Veterans Memorial Park kayak/canoe launch Open map

Veterans Memorial Park is a public city park with a kayak/canoe launch, but Wisconsin River Trips notes the river access uses steep stairs and an awkward railing for kayaks.

Finish

Take-out

Nepco Creek / County Z access Open map

The Centralia Dam portage is roughly 1000 feet on the east bank and uses a golf-course-edge path with stairs near the reentry.

Access caveats

  • Veterans Memorial Park is a public city park with a kayak/canoe launch, but Wisconsin River Trips notes the river access uses steep stairs and an awkward railing for kayaks.
  • The Centralia Dam portage is roughly 1000 feet on the east bank and uses a golf-course-edge path with stairs near the reentry.
  • The Port Edwards Dam portage can be about 2500 feet on the east bank unless low water allows a shorter legal carry near the overflow-gate area; confirm conditions before relying on the shorter option.
  • The Nepco Creek take-out is easy to miss. Wisconsin River Trips recommends paddling a short distance up Nepco Creek to shorten the carry to County Z.

Watch for

  • Dam warning lines, overflow gates, recirculating current, and fast powerhouse outflow below Wisconsin Rapids, Centralia, and Port Edwards.
  • Grignon Rapids and lower boulder-garden current, which are Class I-II at lower water and can become Class II-III in high water.
  • Wind on impounded pools, submerged bedrock, shallow boulder gardens, and a long day if portages run slowly.
  • Sharp gauge changes; Wisconsin River Trips specifically warns that the Wisconsin can rise or fall quickly and that forecast graphs matter before committing.
