Difficulty moderate Intermediate whitewater. Wisconsin Trail Guide lists Class II-III, including Crowle, Horserace, Twenty Day, Boy Scout, Hanson, and Gilmore's Mistake rapids. Less experienced paddlers should scout, portage, or choose an easier Wolf reach.
Permits None noted No route-specific permit was found for the Langlade County segment above Markton. Check posted DNR/fishery-area access rules, and do not continue into downstream Menominee Reservation access without separate permission and local guidance.
Camping Day trip No on-route campsite is assumed for this whitewater day run. Nearby forest and private lodging options exist in the broader Wolf River corridor, but they should be planned separately.
Season May-Sep Spring through fall can work because the upper Wolf holds water well, but dry spells make the boulder gardens bumpy and high rain-fed water raises the consequence of holes, waves, wood, and swims.

Access, shuttle, and map

Start

Put-in

Highway 64 DNR Landing, Langlade Open map

The Highway 64 landing is a public DNR access next to the live Langlade gauge and is also the take-out for the upstream Hollister-to-Langlade route.

Finish

Take-out

Markton County M Landing Open map

County M is the planned take-out before downstream Menominee Reservation access rules become a separate issue. Do not assume downstream landings are public without checking current tribal and outfitter guidance.

Pulling access map tiles. Usually under 5 seconds.

Access caveats

  • The Highway 64 landing is a public DNR access next to the live Langlade gauge and is also the take-out for the upstream Hollister-to-Langlade route.
  • County M is the planned take-out before downstream Menominee Reservation access rules become a separate issue. Do not assume downstream landings are public without checking current tribal and outfitter guidance.
  • Herb's Landing and Crab n Jack's/Wild Wolf-area landings are common whitewater alternates, but this route uses the published Markton County M endpoint and coordinates.

Watch for

  • Long boulder gardens and named rapids including Crowle, Horserace, Twenty Day, Boy Scout, Hanson, and Gilmore's Mistake.
  • Bony lines below about 400 cfs and stronger holes, pushier waves, and more consequential swims above about 950 cfs on the Langlade gauge.
  • Strainers, deadfall, cold water, and private/reservation access issues if you miss the planned take-out.
