Difficulty easy Mostly beginner-friendly quietwater and riffles at normal levels, but the Elkader take-out sits upstream of a dam. Identify Access #39A early, land on river left, and never drift past posted portage warnings.
Permits None noted No route-specific paddling permit is known. Big Spring Campground is a Clayton County / MyCountyParks facility, so follow posted campground, parking, and day-use rules.
Camping Options nearby Big Spring Campground has primitive reservable campsites near the put-in. Frieden Park just downstream has rough camping and canoe access; confirm current Clayton County rules before planning an overnight.
Season Apr-Oct Big Spring adds reliable coldwater inflow, so this shorter lower leg can hold up better than the shallower Elgin-to-Big-Spring approach. Dry spells can still expose gravel and scrape-prone riffles, while rain can make the Elkader dam approach and landing faster.

Access, shuttle, and map

Launch at Big Spring Campground / Access #47 and take out at Elkader Access #39A for the official lower pre-dam Turkey River water-trail leg. This is the shorter, more reliable half of the Elgin-to-Elkader corridor because Big Spring adds coldwater flow before the river bends into Elkader.

Start

Put-in

Big Spring Campground / Water Trail Access #47 Open map

Big Spring Campground is the cleaner public put-in for this route; nearby Frieden Park #46 is another official access about a half mile downstream if logistics require it.

Finish

Take-out

Elkader Access #39A / Sandpit Road Open map

Elkader Access #39A is upstream of the Elkader dam. Watch for water-trail signs, land on river left, and do not continue toward the dam unless you are intentionally portaging around it.

Access caveats

  • Big Spring Campground is the cleaner public put-in for this route; nearby Frieden Park #46 is another official access about a half mile downstream if logistics require it.
  • Elkader Access #39A is upstream of the Elkader dam. Watch for water-trail signs, land on river left, and do not continue toward the dam unless you are intentionally portaging around it.
  • The Elkader landing can be a skinny sand-and-mud path rather than a developed ramp, so carrying boats up the bank may be awkward at low or high water.

Watch for

  • Scrapey riffles and gravel bars near and below 220 cfs on the Elkader gauge.
  • Abandoned car debris, wood piles, and strainers along outside bends.
  • Wind through the wider valley, shallow side channels, and the current slowing as the Elkader dam pool begins.
  • Mandatory take-out / portage behavior at Elkader; never pass posted dam warnings.
