Difficulty moderate Friends of the Kaw frames this as the next access-to-access segment and does not flag a dam in the reach, but it is still a big, shallow, moving river with shifting sandbars, wind exposure, possible wood, private banks, and a bridge-area take-out approach at Wamego. Treat it as a guarded moderate day unless flows are low, weather is calm, and the group already knows Kaw navigation.
Permits None noted No special paddling permit is known for private boats on the Kansas River. Use public ramps, follow posted city and county access rules, check Kansas boating/PFD requirements, and respect fishing-license rules if fishing.
Camping Day trip Treat this as a day trip. Sandbars can be legal public river stops under current Kansas Riverkeeper guidance, but banks above the river are private; do not camp, picnic, or portage onto adjacent private land without permission.
Season Mar-Nov Spring through fall is the practical season. This St. George-to-Wamego reach stays within the 10-mile novice distance guidance, but the Kaw remains a sand-bottom prairie river whose channel, bars, ramp toes, and bank conditions shift after high water.

Access, shuttle, and map

Start

Put-in

St. George / Boggs Landing Access Ramp Open map

St. George / Boggs Landing is a public river-left ramp with strong amenities, but local parking, events, mud, and ramp condition still need a same-day check.

Wamego Access Ramp Open map

At Wamego, Friends of the Kaw says it is often advisable to pass under the K-99 bridge and turn upstream next to the bank to reach the ramp.

Access caveats

  • St. George / Boggs Landing is a public river-left ramp with strong amenities, but local parking, events, mud, and ramp condition still need a same-day check.
  • At Wamego, Friends of the Kaw says it is often advisable to pass under the K-99 bridge and turn upstream next to the bank to reach the ramp.
  • Do not continue downstream toward Belvue without separate dam planning; Friends of the Kaw flags the Belvue Low-Head Dam at river mile 120 on the Wamego-to-Belvue segment.
  • All access and parking are subject to same-day city, county, and ramp conditions. Mud, silt, event closures, and shifted sand can change ramp usability.

Watch for

  • Low flows below about 1,000 cfs can make the channel narrow and sandbar navigation slow or technical.
  • Flows above 5,000 cfs are outside the novice band, and above 8,000 cfs Friends of the Kaw says sandbar rest stops become scarce.
  • Wind across open bends, storms, rising water, floating wood, strainers, bank hooks and fishing lines, and changing sandbars.
  • Private banks along the Kaw; stay with public ramps and legal sandbar stops rather than climbing banks or using private land.
